Here’s a UK registered LA-4-180 pictured on Lough Erne, at Lusty Beg Island, just a mile from Castle Archdale, the famous WWII home to Sunderlands and Catalinas.

This pic shows the first ever seaplane visit to Lusty Beg Island.

We started a business Air Whitsunday in April 1973 with one Lake VH-ETY. This aircraft is shown on the beach at Happy Bay, Long Island, Whitsunday, Great Barrier Reef, Australia (1st-Lake-QLD-1973).

Over the next two years the business grew to three Lakes (Happy Bay 1975). This was the limit we could accommodate at the Happy Bay site, so we moved to the local airstrip at Airlie Beach in 1978 and by 1982 we had a fleet of five Lakes.

These operated in flights of up to the whole five aircraft taking visitors out to the Great Barrier Reef, where we would alight in a lagoon and transfer to small boats for coral viewing and snorkling.

When it was really busy we would run a shuttle services with each aircraft doing up to five return trips a day. The flight time was 25 mins each way. We had a crew of fourteen pilots.
